R~05 DEER IN FOREST --3~D

Deer In Forest -- Above
Below -- Edge View |
| A few
years ago I had my son Steve cut Deer
in Forest for a friend of mine. HOWEVER, that rendition was
not 3-D - the Scene was on just one layer, with a spacer between it and
the back. Looking at the pattern, I was sure that pattern could be
redone as a true 3-Dimensional Design. I had my wife work it over,
and this is the result of the Design's makeover. The front layer with the large trees was cut from Cherry, the second layer with the Deer is Maple, the back layer with smaller trees was cut from Black Walnut, and finally a solid backer of Luan Plywood with the same "cloned" edge as the other layers was cut . All layers were dipped in Tung Oil before being glued together. The finished piece has the following dimensions: At the Widest point - 7.8", at the Highest Point - 5.2", and it is 0.75" thick on the edge. It can be place on a stand or hung on a wall for display. This Piece was completed the 3rd week of January 2012. |
R~04 CALVARY CROSS - TWO VERSIONS

These pieces were created NOT from Wood, but from North Carolina
Soapstone. A friend gave us a 25 +/- raw chunk to see what
we could do with it. Having cut some slabs, Dave selected a
0.2" slice for his 1st piece (photos above) and cut out a
3.5"W by 5.4"H Cross. He then took an end piece and
drilled a slot in the top to drop the cross into. The Finished
work is 5.7" High with a Base Width of 7.5". For his 2nd piece (left and right), he used a 0.6" slice and cut out a 4"W by 7"H Cross, setting it into a 6"W x 3"H x 4"D, Side Chunk. Finished height 9". He inscribed a Bible Reference on the flat end. He rubbed in Vegetable Oil into both Pieces to highlight the stone colors - Lt Gray with Orange and Moss Green Flecks. First Piece - completed 2nd week, and the 2nd Piece - 3rd week of January 2012. |

R~02 VINE/FLOWERS SUNCATCHER

The
Pattern for this piece was originally intended as a round box top
decoration. We thought it would make a very pretty Suncatcher as
well. The Finished Piece was cut from White Oak with very obvious Darker Grain. It has a 5.2" diameter and is 0.2" thick. A Ribbon will be attached to hang it by. Piece was completed in the 2nd Week of January 2012. |
R~01 COMPLETE MODEL TRAIN SET

I had my wife post a couple of the car patterns to the left, to show that this model
was not a purchased "cookie cutter model kit", but rather the
entire project was cut by me from 1/8" Baltic Birch Plywood, then
sanded, assembled,
and glued as needed. The finished cars range in length from 7.25" for the Passenger cars, down to 2.25" for the Wood Tender. The color scheme is of my own design. I added small additions not shown on the patterns; such as a Headlamp & Steam Whistle for the Engine, and Wood Chunks in the Tender Car. Painting the whole Train was somewhat tedious, but I thoroughly enjoyed doing all aspects of this Project. It really required a lot of patience! After finishing the Train, I set it up on our fireplace mantle. It looked out of place sitting there alone. Then it hit me -- It needs some scenery behind it! I cut a strip of 1/4" plywood shaped to resemble mountains and hills on the top edge, spray painted some base coat in 2 greens. When that dried I set to work painting in the snow capped peaks, streams, washes, trees, and bushes. The Scene still seemed to lack something so I pulled out my collection of cutout pieces. Many of these I thought looked like animals, trees, and shrubs. I scattered them all over the landscape board, glued them on. and finally added color to develop a more natural look. Of these add-ons, 10 actually are featured animal cutouts from Dream Catcher centers I scrolled out a couple of months ago. Phoebe is now working to finish decorating the rest of these, now that the Christmas Rush is finally over... By the way, see if YOU can find the ten animals mentioned above..... Completed the 1st week of January 2012 |
