ELEPHANT
BEAD SORTING TRAY
This tray is an adaptation of a pattern
by a Pretoria, South Africa resident by the name of Sue Mey. She is one of the
regular submitters to Creative woodworks and crafts magazine. A gentleman asked
if I could make him a bead sorting tray, and he wanted an elephant incorporated
into it. Sue's pattern worked wonderfully, and a nice touch is the overhead sun
formed by the grain patterns. When I asked him why an elephant, he said they
were good luck!
The wood used for this piece is a nicely grained plank
of Oak. The overall dimensions for this tray are roughly 4"
wide
x 6" high x 1/2" thick. The tray area itself was routed out
with a ball end router, to work with the pattern and give some separation areas
in the tray. Probably
any number of figure types could be used instead of the elephant head, such as
other animal heads, birds, flowers, etc.
THIS PIECE ADDED 9/5/08
